As someone who is a huge fan of tactics RPGs like Disgaea, Fire Emblem, and Final Fantasy Tactics, Fantasy War Tactics R scratches a nearly unreachable itch. Not a lot of tactics RPGs can do that, and if you’re someone who likes moving characters around squares in turn-based battles involving intricate strategies, then this game is definitely for you. Developed by gaming giant Nexon, it features outstanding graphics and an anime art style, and though the story is eccentric and comedic, it’s an adventure worth undertaking. So, if you’re looking for a new RPG to invest your time in, would this game be something worth trying? Let’s find out:
The game’s first few levels are mainly tutorials wherein you will learn the basics and grasp the game’s many intricate mechanics. This also keeps you up to speed with the story which is probably unlike any other you’ve played before. Whereas others are content in writing stories about saving the world or leaving a small village to go on a journey, you play as a wizard bent on world domination. Yes, you play as an “evil” mastermind and anti-hero who isn’t inherently a bad person. However, your character, called “Lord” by everybody else, will take on the real villains in the game: the World Reformation Society. In any case, the game provides maximum hilarity, especially during the dialogue sequences and character interactions. There are cutscenes and side stories you can view to learn more about the characters, like Chris and Ian. These are worth a watch considering the game rewards you for doing so.
Progression is done by traveling from island to island. Your goal is to basically “conquer” these islands, and you can do so by entering the various stages in each. Note that there are a few levels in each island, giving you a lot to work on. In addition, the islands have their own respective themes, treating you to varied environments and unique enemies. In any case, it is a game that would demand your time and commitment, but considering what it provides, the experience is a joy. However, most matches last a measly five to 10 minutes. You can breeze past through them within 30 hours or fewer, especially if you grab hold of the game’s many microtransaction items. Moreover, your play times are restricted, no thanks to its energy mechanic.
Fantasy War Tactics R’s gameplay mechanics are typical of a tactics RPG. Turn-based battles are the norm, taking place in a battlefield with square grids. During your turn, you will get to control one character at a time, and you’ll have the option to move them or to simply conduct attacks. There are numerous combat strategies to consider and enforce, like making two characters cooperate with each other to perform joint attacks. In addition, characters have their own respective skills and capabilities, so be sure to note each before assembling a team.
Overall, Fantasy War Tactics R is definitely a game you have to try out, even if you’re not high on tactics RPGs. With a great cast of characters, hilarious writing, and refined gameplay mechanics, it is more than worth the time you spend on playing it.
